Jagjit Singh is an admired singer of ghazals in Hindi/Urdu and Punjabi. He is not only a singer but a composer and also a playback singer in Indian Movies. Jagjit Singh’s birth place was Ganganagar (also called "SriGanganager"), Rajasthan. His father Sardar Amar Singh Dhiman, who was a government servant, was belonging to Dalla village in Ropar district of Punjab. Jagjit Singh’s mother Sardarni Bachchan Kaur was from a very religious Sokhi family of Ottallan village near Samralla. Jagjit Singh has four sisters and two brothers. He was fondly called as JEET by his family.

Jagjit Singh’s father wanted him to pursue Indian Administrative Service as a career but later was very much happy with Jagjit Singh’s achievement in the world of music.

Jagjit Singh studied in Government College, Ganganagar after matriculation and then graduated from DAV College, Jalandhar in the Arts Stream. Jagjit Singh got his Post Graduate Degree from Kurukshetra University, Haryana in History.

Jagjit Singh was fond of music since his childhood. He learnt music from Pandit Chaganlal Sharma for two years in Ganganagar. Then he learnt different forms of Indian classical music such as Khayal, Thumri and Dhrupad from Ustad Jamaal Khan of Sainia Gharana for next six years.

In 1965, Jagjit Singh arrived in Mumbai in search for better opportunities in music career as a musician and singer. Like any other career struggler, he too had his share of trials and troubles. In Mumbai he lived as a paying guest and accepted every offer he received like doing advertisement jingles or performing at weddings and parties.
