Mohammed Rafi was born on December 24, 1924 and died on July 31, 1980. He was born in a middle class Muslim family at Kotla Sultan Singh village near Amritsar in Indian Punjab, now this place is in Pakistan. He is almost certainly the most famed Hindi playback singer of yesteryears. His songs are still listened & liked in all over the world. People from a variety of nations from India to Kenya to UK to West Indies were won over by his sweet melodies.

 

Muhammad Rafi along with Lata Mangeshkar shared the record for singing the maximum number of songs, approximately 26,000 during his film career span of forty years from 1940 to 1980. Muhammad Rafi has also sung a large number of tracks with other famous female playback singers like Geeta Dutt and Asha Bhonsle.

 

Muhammad Rafi’s Music Colelction ranges from patriotic songs to classical numbers, highky romantic tracks to sad lamentations, Bhajans to qawaalis and ghazals, and from fast fun filled songs to slow melancholic tunes. He had a strong control over Urdu & Hindi and a powerful variety that could accommodate this variety.

 

Muhammad Rafi sung tragedy heroes like Rajendra Kumar and Jeetendra, renowned actors like Dilip Kumar and Bharat Bhushan & comedian Johnny Walker. Muhammad Rafi has also sung some songs for singer-actor Kishore. The credit for his singing is usually named as Mohd. Rafi or M.Rafi.

 

At the age of fourteen, Muhammad Rafi shifted to Lahore and started learning Indian classical music from Ustaad Ghulam Ali Khan. Rafi started imitating his ideal G. M. Durrani and became a playback singer.

 

Muhammad Rafi's debut was Punjabi song for the film Gul Baloch, it was a duet with the female playback singer Zeenat Begum. The title of the song was 'Soniye nee, Heeriye nee', it was composed by Shyam Sunder. Muhammad Rafi sung the song so well that the composer Shyam Sunder was so much impressed with his voice and gave seven more songs to him in another film Bazaar. Muhammad Rafi's ability was noticed by Music Director Firoz Nizami, who found him a job opportunity at Radio station Lahore. Muhammad Rafi's first popular song was “Yaha Badla Wafa Ka”, composed by Firoz Nizami. It gave Muhammad Rafi huge fame.

 

Muhammad Rafi also tried his luck as an actor by doing short roles in movies like Jugnu & Laila-Majnu (1945). In movie Laila-Majnu, he sung the song 'tera jalwa' as a part of the chorus.
